20 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Pattern Stitch. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
sk2p (Slip-k2tog-pass slipped st over)
A double decrease worked as follows:
Insert right needle as if to knit, and slip the next st from the left needle to the right needle.
Knit the next 2 sts tog.
With tip of left needle, lift the slipped st (the 2nd st on right needle) up and over the k2tog (first st on right needle) and off the needle - you have decreased 2 sts.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.
yo (yarn over) A yarn over (yo) creates a new loop on your needle and is worked by wrapping the yarn around your right-hand needle.
The finished yarn over will leave an open space (like an eyelet) in your knitting and will increase your stitch count by 1 st.
Row 1 (RS): K1, *yo, (k1, p1) 7 times, k1, yo, k1; rep from * once more - 37 sts at the end of this row.
Row 2: K1, *p2, (k1, p1) 7 times, p1, k1; rep from * once more.
Row 3: K2, yo, (k1, p1) 7 times, k1, yo, k3, yo, (k1, p1) 7 times, k1, yo, k2 - 41 sts at the end of this row.
Row 4: K2, p2, (k1, p1) 7 times, p1, k3, p2, (k1, p1) 7 times, p1, k2.
Row 5: K3, yo, (k1, p1) 7 times, k1, yo, k5, yo, (k1, p1) 7 times, k1, yo, k3 - 45 sts.
Row 6: K3, p2, (k1, p1) 7 times, p1, k5, p2, (k1, p1) 7 times, p1, k3.
Row 7: K4, yo, (k1, p1) 7 times, k1, yo, k7, yo, (k1, p1) 7 times, k1, yo, k4 - 49 sts.
Row 8: K4, p2, (k1, p1) 7 times, p1, k7, p2, (k1, p1) 7 times, p1, k4.
Row 9: K5, (ssk) 3 times, sk2p, (k2tog) 3 times, k9, (ssk) 3 times, sk2p, (k2tog) 3 times, k5 - 33 sts.
Row 10: Purl.
Rep Rows 1-10 for Pattern Stitch.
Scarf is worked in two halves to create scallops on each end.
The halves are grafted together at center back.
Three sts at each side are worked in Garter st (k every row) for borders.
The rem sts are worked in the Pattern Stitch.
Markers are used to separate the Garter st border sts from the rem sts.
The first row of the pattern st is worked over 33 sts.
The number of sts in the pattern is increased to 49 sts on Rows 1-7 of pattern, then decreased again back to 33 sts on Row 9.
Cast on 39 sts.
Row 1 (RS): K3, place marker (pm), work Row 1 of Pattern st across to last 3 sts, pm, k3 - 43 sts at the end of this row.
Row 2: K3, slip marker (sm), work Row 2 of Pattern st, sm, k3 - 47 sts at the end of this row.
Keeping first and last 3 sts in Garter st (k every row) for border, and rem sts in Pattern st as established, work until Rows 1-10 of Pattern st have been repeated a total of 14 times (140 rows total).
Sl these sts to a holder.
Work same as First Half but do not sl these sts to a holder.
Sl sts of First Half back onta a seperate needle.
Holding the 2 needles parallel with WS of fabric together, thread a large-eyed blunt needle with one of the yarn ends and work as follows:
Insert needle as if to purl into first st on front piece.
Insert needle as if to knit into first st on back piece.
Then follow steps 1-4 as outlined below.
1) Insert needle as if to knit through first st on front needle and let the st drop from needle.
2) Insert needle into 2nd st on front needle as if to purl and pull the yarn through, leaving st on the needle.
3) Insert needle into first st on back needle as if to purl and let it drop from the needle.
4) Insert needle as if to knit through 2nd st on back needle and pull the yarn through, leaving st on needle.
Rep steps 1-4 until all sts are gone.
When finished, adjust tension as necessary.
Weave in ends.
