Circular knitting needle size 8 (5 mm), 16 in. (40 cm) long
GAUGE:
17 sts + 25 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. STITCH EXPLANATION:
3/3 LC (3 over 3 left cross) Slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k3, then k3 from cable needle.

Cable Cast On Make a slip knot on left needle.

Knit 1 st through slip knot, but do not drop slip knot from left needle; transfer new st from right needle to left needle - 2 sts on left needle.

*Insert right needle between first 2 sts on left needle; wrap yarn and pull through (as if knitting a st); transfer new st to left needle.

Repeat from * to cast on desired number of sts.

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle.

Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.

ssk (slip, slip, knit)Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.

With 2 double pointed needles, cast on 8 sts.

Row 1 (WS): Purl.

Row 2 (RS): K1, m1, k6, m1, k1 - 10 sts at the end of this row.

Row 3: P1, k1, p6, k1, p1.

Row 4: K1, m1, place marker (pm), work Row 1 of Cable pattern over next 8 sts, pm, m1, k1 - 12 sts at the end of this row.

Row 5: P2, slip marker (sm), work Row 2 of Cable pattern over next 8 sts, sm, p2.

Note: Continue to slip markers on each row of Earflap.

Row 6: K1, m1, k1, work Row 3 of Cable pattern over next 8 sts, k1, m1, k1 - 14 sts at the end of this row.

Row 7: P3, work Row 4 of Cable pattern over next 8 sts, p3.

When working Cable pattern for Hat, begin with the cable rnd that follows the last Cable row you worked on the Earflaps.

Place marker for beg of rnd.

Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.

FINISHING Fringe Attach 3 columns of fringe to centerline of Hat, as follows: 1.

Beg each column of fringe just above ribbing at center back of Hat and end each column in first rnd of crown shaping at front of Hat.2.

Cut strands of yarn approximately 8 in.

(20.5 cm) long.

For each fringe, fold a strand in half.

Use crochet hook to draw fold through Hat, forming a loop.

Pull ends of fringe through this loop.

Pull to tighten.

Trim fringe evenly.





Ties Cut three 24 in.

(61 cm) strands of yarn.

With crochet hook, draw strands halfway through center edge of one Earflap.

Divide strands into 3 groups of 2 strands each and braid.

Knot end of braid.

Make a braid on remaining Earflap.

Weave in ends.
