6 single crochet = about 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

Cowl is worked in joined rounds.

At the end of each round, work a slip stitch to join the last stitch to the first stitch.

Turn your work at the beginning of each round.

If you find it difficult to join the beginning chain into a ring without the chain twisting, Round 1 can be worked as a row then joined into a round, as follows: Chain 37, work a single crochet in 2nd chain from hook, work a single crochet in each remaining chain across; join with slip stitch in first single crochet.

Proceed to Round 2.

When weaving in ends, use the beginning tail to sew ends of first row together.

Chain 36.

Being careful not to twist the chain; join the ends of the chain with a slip stitch in the first chain to form a ring.
Round 1: Chain 1, work a single crochet in each chain around; join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet-36 single crochets at the end of this round.
Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet), turn, work a double crochet in each single crochet around; join with a slip stitch in the top of the turning chain.
Round 3: Chain 1, turn, work a single crochet in each double crochet around; join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet.
Repeat Rounds 2 and 3 until almost all yarn has been used.

Fasten off.

Weave in ends.
