EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THIS PROJECT.
The above gauge is provided as a reference - the felting process will affect the finished size. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
1. Due to the nature of the felting process, the size of your Muff may not match the pattern measurements exactly.
2. Muff is worked in St st (k on RS, p on WS) following charts and from written instructions.
3. When working from charts, work from right to left on RS rows and from left to right on WS rows; carry color not in use across WS of work.
4. Yarn A is worked with a single strand; yarn B is worked with 2 strands held tog.
5. If desired, continue to rep Chart 6 until almost all yarn has been used for a longer muff.
With 1 strand of A, cast on 43 sts.
Beg with a knit row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 2 rows.
Join 2 strands of B held tog.
Note: Charts are worked in St st with 1 strand of A and 2 strands of B.
Beg with Row 1, work 4-st rep of Chart 1 ten times across row, then work last 3 sts of Chart.
Continue working Rows 1-4 of Chart 1 until piece measures about 5 1/2 in.
(14 cm) from beg, end with a Row 4.
Beg with Row 1, work 6-st rep of Chart 2 seven times across row, then work last st of Chart.
Continue working Rows 1-6 of Chart 2 until piece measures about 11 in.
(28 cm) from beg, end with a Row 6.
Beg with Row 1, work 2-st rep of Chart 3 twenty-one times across row, then work last st of Chart.
Continue working Rows 1-4 of Chart 3 until piece measures about 16 1/2 in.
(42 cm) from beg, end with a Row 4.
Beg with Row 1, work 12-st rep of Chart 4 three times across row, then work last 7 sts of Chart.
Continue working Rows 1-4 of Chart 4 until piece measures about 23 in.
(58.5 cm) from beg, end with a Row 4.
Beg with Row 1, work 2-st rep of Chart 5 twenty-one times across row, then work last st of Chart.
Continue working Rows 1 and 2 of Chart 5 until piece about 37 in.
(94 cm) from beg, end with a Row 2.
Beg with Row 1, work 4-st rep of Chart 6 ten times, then work last 3 sts of Chart.
Continuing with Chart 6, work Rows 1-14 then rep Rows 9-14 six more times.
With 1 strand of A, knit 2 rows.
Weave in ends.
Wash Muff by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate.
To felt additionally, dry by machine on a regular setting until almost dry.
Remove from dryer and pull into shape.
Allow Muff to dry completely.
Note: The A-color yarn will felt, while the B-color yarn will not.
