16 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Stockinette st worked in rnds (k every rnd). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st.
You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.
K2, p2 Rib (worked in rnds)
Rnd 1: *K2, p2; rep from * around.
Rnd 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Rnd 2 for K2, p2 Rib.
Hat is worked in rnds from the top of Hat (crown) downwards.
Increases (kfb) are worked evenly spaced in every other rnd to shape Hat.
Beg at crown, cast on 6 sts onto 1 double pointed needle.
Row 1: *Kfb; rep from * to end of row - 12 sts at the end of this rnd.
Divide sts onto 3 needles.
Place marker for beg of rnd.
Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: *K1, kfb; rep from * to end of rnd - 18 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: Knit.
Rnd 4: *K2, kfb; rep from * to end of rnd - 24 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 5: Knit.
Rnd 6: *K3, kfb, place marker (pm); rep from * to end of rnd - 30 sts at the end of this rnd.
Note: Markers indicate where increases (kfb) will be worked.
In following rnds, slip markers as you come to them.
Use different colored markers for the beg of rnd and for increase locations.
Rnd 7: Knit.
Rnd 8: *K to 1 st before marker, kfb, slip marker (sm); rep from * around - 36 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnds 9-24: Rep Rnds 7 and 8 eight times - 84 sts at the end of Rnd 24.
Note: Remove increase markers as next rnd is worked.
Next 14 Rnds: Knit.
Work in K2, p2 Rib for 4 rnds.
