18 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in chevron pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

kfb (knit into front and then back) An increase worked as follows: 1.

Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.

Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st.

You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.

Drop the st from your left hand needle - 1 st increased.

skp Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch - 1 st decreased.

Chevron pattern used in scarf forms 'peaks' and 'valleys'.

Peaks are made with decreases (k2tog and skp), and valleys with increases (kfb).

Peaks are always worked over peaks of previous rows and valleys over valleys.

Markers are used to separate the chevron pattern from the Garter st (k every row) borders.
