Additional Materials
MATERIALS NOTE Pullover can be worked back and forth on circular needles (as if working on straight needles) if you prefer to use a set of interchangeable needles to substitute for some of the needle sizes.
GAUGE:
Gauge changes throughout the pattern by changing the number of strands of yarn and the needle size: 4 sts + 4 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on RS) with Speed Stix and 9 strands held tog. 5 sts + 6 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st with size 35 (19 mm) needles and 8 strands held tog. 6 sts + 8 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st with size 19 (15 mm) needles and 7 strands held tog. 7 sts + 10 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st with size 17 (13 mm) needles and 6 strands held tog. 8 sts + 12 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st with size 15 (10 mm) needles and 5 strands held tog. 9 sts + 12 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st with size 13 (9 mm) needles and 4 strands held tog. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:
kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1.

Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2.

Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st.

You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3.

Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.

PATTERN STITCH
K1, p1 Rib (multiple of 2 sts + 1)
Row 1: K1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib.

NOTES:
1.

The largest needles are used first, then needle size and number of strands of yarn held together change.
Nine strands are held together when working with the largest needles, one less strand is used for each successive smaller needle size.
2.

The combination of needle size and number of strands determines the gauge.
3.

Front, Back, and Sleeves of Sweater are knit from lower edge to neck.
4.

Although you are increasing stitches in the Front and Back until you begin shaping the armhole, changes in gauge will actually cause the measurement of piece to DECREASE as work progresses from the lower edge up.
5.

When cutting yarn strands, leave a tail to weave in later.
