18 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) over pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
sk2p (slip-k2tog-pass slipped st over)
A double decrease worked as follows:
Insert right needle as if to knit, and slip the next st from the left needle to the right needle.
Knit the next 2 sts together.
With tip of left needle, lift the slipped st (the 2nd st on right needle) up and over the k2tog (first st on right needle) and off the needle - you have decreased 2 sts.
yo (yarn over)
An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
Take yarn to back, over the right needle.
This creates the new st.
You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.
1. This pattern includes increases (yarn overs (yo)) to compensate for each decrease (sk2p) so the st count should always remain the same.
Be sure to count your sts at the end of each row!
2. The pattern used in this Scarf requires that you keep track of your sts.
Rows 2 and 10, have you place st markers so that there are 10 sts between each set of markers.
As you work each RS row, count your sts every time you come to a marker (except the first marker) to ensure that you still have 10 sts.
Cast on 43 sts.
Row 1 (WS): K2, p to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 2 (RS): K2, place marker (pm) *yo, k3, sk2p, k3, yo, k1, pm; rep from * to last st, k1.
Slip markers as you come to them.
Rows 3-8: Rep last 2 rows 3 times.
Row 9: Rep Row 1 and remove markers.
Row 10: K1, k2tog, k3, pm, (yo, k1, yo, k3, sk2p, k3, pm) 3 times, yo, k1, yo, k3, k2tog, k1.
Rows 11-16: Rep last 2 rows 3 times.
Remove markers when working Row 16.
Rep Rows 1-16 until almost all of the yarn has been used, ending with a WS row.
Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row.
Weave in ends.
