18 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.
When you see 'work even' in the instructions, this means to continue on in the pattern st you have established without changing the st count by increasing, decreasing, or binding off.
Cast on 63 (75, 81) sts.
Knit 4 rows.
Beg with a knit row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 8 (9, 10) in.
(20.5 (23, 25.5) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.
Next Row (RS): *K1, k2tog; rep from * to end of row - 42 (50, 54) sts at the end of this row.
Work even in Garter st (k every row) until yoke measures 1 1/2 (1 3/4, 2) in.
(4 (4.5, 5) cm), end with a WS row.
Bind off 4 (6, 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows - 34 (38, 42) sts rem.
Next Row (RS): K1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, ssk, k1 - 32 (36, 40) sts at the end of this row.
Next Row: Knit.
Rep last 2 rows 3 (4, 4) more times - 26 (28, 32) sts rem.
Work even in Garter st until yoke measures 3 (3 1/2, 4) in.
(7.5 (9, 10) cm), end with a WS row.
Next Row (RS): K6 and sl these sts to a holder for strap, bind off 14 (16, 20) sts for neck, knit to end - 6 strap sts rem.
Work even in Garter st over rem 6 sts for 3 (3 1/2, 3 1/2) in.
(7.5 (9, 9) cm) for strap.
Sl rem 6 strap sts from holder back to needle and re-join yarn.
Work even in Garter st for 3 (3 1/2, 3 1/2) in.
(7.5 (9, 9) cm).
Make same as Back.
Sew side seams.
Lap Front straps over Back straps at shoulders and adjust to fit.
Sew buttons in place, sewing through all layers to secure straps.
Weave in ends.
