Additional Materials
Needle nose pliers Duct tape 32 (34) in. (81.5 (86.5 cm)) heavy gauge wire (a wire coat hanger works well) or craft wire
12 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd) When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

kfb (knit into front and then back) An increase worked as follows: 1.

Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.

Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st.

You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.

Drop the st from your left hand needle - 1 st increased.

yo (yarn over) An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows: 1.

Bring yarn to front, between the needles.

Take yarn to back, over the right needle.

This creates the new st.

You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

The designer used size 7 needles to achieve the gauge stated in the pattern, but we are suggesting you try a size 10.

As always, gauge is very individual and you may need to experiment with several different needle sizes to find what works for you.

HAT Crochet Cast-On1.

Make a slip knot and insert hook through knot (photo below).

Do not tighten the loop onto the hook; you will be inserting your hook into again.

Wrap yarn over hook and pull through slip knot.

Wrap yarn over hook again and draw through loop just made - you have cast-on 1 st.

Insert hook into slip knot loop again.

(photo below).

Rep Steps 2-4 until a total of 5 (6) sts have been cast-on (photo below).

Divide sts onto 3 needles (photo below).

Place marker for beginning of rnd.

Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.

Slip marker at the beginning of every rnd.

Rnd 1 (RS): (Kfb in next st) 5 times, k0 (1) - 10 (11) sts at the end of this rnd.

Note: The '0' means that there will be one st remaining to knit at the end of the rnd for the M/L size only.

Rnd 2 and all even-numbered rnds: Knit.

Rnd 3: *K1, yo; rep from * around - 20 (22) sts at the end of this rnd.

Note: When sts have been sufficiently increased, change to circular needle.

Rnd 5: *K2, yo; rep from * around - 30 (33) sts at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 7: *K3, yo; rep from * around - 40 (44) sts at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 9: *K4, yo; rep from * around - 50 (55) sts at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 11: *K5, yo; rep from * around - 60 (66) sts at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 13: *K6, yo; rep from * around - 70 (77) sts at the end of this rnd.

Work in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd) until piece measures about 7 in.

(18 cm) from beginning.

Next Rnd: *K7, yo; rep from * around - 80 (88) sts at the end of this rnd.

Next 6 Rnds: Knit.

Next Rnd: K4, yo, *k8, yo; rep from * to last 4 sts, k4 - 90 (99) sts at the end of this rnd.

Next 6 Rnds: Knit.

Next Rnd (Turning Ridge): Purl.

Next 3 Rnds: Knit.Bind off, leaving a long yarn tail.

FINISHINGUsing pliers, form wire into a circle, overlapping ends by about 1 in.
