8 sts + 8 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

kfb (knit into front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st -1 st increased.

1. Hat is worked back and forth in rows, beg at top of Hat.

Scarf is worked along a portion of the Hat sts.
2. One color is used per row.

Colors are changed every 2 rows.

Sts are slipped with yarn in front (wyif) or with yarn in back (wyib) of work as instructed.

With yarn in front or in back of work refers to the work as it faces you.
3. Unless otherwise instructed, do not cut yarns when changing color, simply carry the unused colors along the edge of the piece, twisting working yarn around unused colors to secure the strands.
