Plastic wrap or cookie sheet
1 tablespoon (10 grams) cornstarch (for homemade starch)
2-3 drops of essential oil
Laundry starch (if not using homemade starch)
Alternative: Wooden spoon handle can be used instead of knitting needles
Materials are sufficient to make several spirals.
Instructions are provided for homemade starch.
Use purchase laundry starch, mixed following package directions, if you prefer.
HOMEMADE STARCH Bring 3/4 cup (150 ml) water to a boil.
Mix cornstarch into 1/4 cup (50 ml) cold water and stir constantly until starch is dissolved.
Once water boils, slowly pour in cornstarch mixture.
Lower heat a bit and stir mixture for one minute.
Remove pot from heat and add essential oil, stirring to mix.
Allow to cool.
SPIRAL Knotting yarn to itself at each end to keep from unraveling, wrap yarn around knitting needle or spoon handle.
One wrapped 12 in.
(30.5 mm) knitting needle is sufficient for one package topper.
Using hands, apply starch mixture to each wrapped needle, squeezing to remove excess.
Set aside on plastic wrap or cookie sheet to dry.
Once yarn has dried, carefully remove it from knitting needle or spoon handle.
Leave some clumped sections intact for a funky look.
Cut into 3 or 4 sections and set aside.
Leaving a 6 in.
(15 cm) yarn tail at either end, wrap yarn around package and tie with a double knot.
Place the spiral sections on top of knot and tie another double knot around them.
OPTIONAL BUTTON DECORATION Thread one tail through both buttonholes and tie with a double knot behind button.
Cut yarn tails to hide.
