9 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased.

ssp (slip, slip, purl) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; pass them back to left needle; purl them tog through back loops – 1 st decreased.

Cowl is worked from the top down.

The straight side edges are seamed to form a tube.

Circular needle is used to accommodate the bulky sts.

Work back and forth in rows on the circular needles as if working on straight needles.
