9 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.
ssp (slip, slip, purl) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; pass them back to left needle; purl them tog through back loops - 1 st decreased.
1. Cowl is worked from the top down.
The straight side edges are seamed to form a tube.
2. Circular needle is used to accommodate the bulky sts.
Work back and forth in rows on the circular needles as if working on straight needles.
Cast on 56 sts.
Row 1 (WS): *K1, p1; rep from * to end of row.

Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.
Next Row (RS): Bind off 14 sts (1 st is on right needle after 14 sts are bound-off), ssk, k22, k2tog, k1, bind off rem 14 sts - 26 sts at the end of this row.
