GAUGE:
14 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:
kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1.

Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.

2.

Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st.

You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3.

Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.

Yo (yarn over)
An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
1.

Bring yarn to front, between the needles.

2.

Take yarn to back, over the right needle.

This creates the new st.

You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

NOTES:
1. The Scarf is worked in a mix of Garter st (k every row) and St st (k on RS, p on WS).
2. The first half of the Scarf is worked in St st, with an increase at the end of every RS row.

Once you have a total of 54 sts, an Eyelet Row is worked.

This is a decorative division of the halves of the Scarf.
3. When working the Eyelet Row, each decrease of k2tog is matched with a compensating yarnover increase - so the st count will not change.
4. The second half of the Scarf is worked in Garter st, with decreases worked at the end of specified rows.

5. Because the row gauge is different for Garter st and St st, the rate of decreases in the second half of the Scarf does not match the rate of increases in the first half of the Scarf.
