16 sts + 16 rows = 4 in. in Arrow Lace pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
sl2kp (slip 2-k1-pass slipped sts over)
A double decrease worked as follows:
Insert right needle into next 2 sts as if to knit them tog, and slip them from the left needle to the right needle.
Knit the next st.
With tip of left needle, lift the 2 slipped sts (the 2nd and 3rd sts on the right needle) up and over the knit st (first st on right needle) and off the needle - you have decreased 2 sts.
ssk (slip, slip, knit)
Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.
yo (yarn over)
An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
Take yarn to back, over the right needle.
This creates the new st.
You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.
Arrow Lace (worked over a multiple of 6 sts + 1 additional st)
Row 1: Purl.
Row 2 (RS): K1, *yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: K2, yo, sl2kp, yo, *k3, yo, sl2kp, yo; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Rep Rows 1-4 for Arrow Lace pattern.
1. Ruanna is worked in 3 pieces; 2 long Lace Panels and 1 short Garter Panel.
2. The Lace Panels are worked in Arrow Lace pattern with first and last 3 sts of each row worked in Garter st (k every row) for Garter st borders.
Stitch markers are used to separate the border sts and the center Arrow Lace pattern sts.
3. The Arrow Lace pattern can be worked from written instructions or by following the Chart.
If working from the chart, read from right to left on RS rows and from left to right on WS rows.
4. In this design, large needles are used to create a lacy effect.
5. The Panels are sewn together at side edges, with the Garter Panel between the 2 Lace Panels.
6. Study your work after completing a few Garter st rows so that you can recognize the Garter ridges - each ridge = 2 rows of Garter st.
7. The wonderful thing about this Ruanna is that after the first Panel is completed, it can be worn on its own until you finish the other 2 Panels and sew them all together!
