24 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
Scarf is worked in Garter st (knit every row) in 8 different color sections.
In each section, 2 rows are worked with one color, then 2 rows with a second color.
One color from each section is carried into the next section.
Do not cut either yarn color when working a section; instead, simply carry the unused color along the side edge of the work.
To create a neat edge on the Scarf, always slip the first st of every row as if to purl.
