CORRECTIONS: (applied Feb 20, 2013)
HAT With smaller needles, cast on 100 sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles, with 25 sts on each needle. Place marker for beg of rnd. Note: Placing the same number of sts onto each needle means that when you work Rnd 1, on first needle, you will k2, p2 across to the last st, then k the last st; on the second needle k1, then continue the K2, p2 Rib. In other words, the K2, p2 rib will not finish with a p2 at the end of each needle. This is fine! The pattern will still work perfectly. If you prefer to have the pattern end with a p2 at the end of every needle, divide your sts as follows: 24 sts on first needle; 28 sts on second needle; 24 sts on third needle; and 24 sts on fourth needle. The above is only a summary of corrections; the corrected pattern text is below (if free) or shipped upon completion of order (if purchased)

GAUGE:
18 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) with larger needles. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

INSTRUCTIONS

HAT With smaller needles, cast on 100 sts.

Divide sts onto 4 needles, with 25 sts on each needle.

Place marker for beg of rnd.

Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.

Work in K2, p2 Rib worked in the rnd until piece measures about 2 1/2 in.

(6.5 cm) from beg.

Change to larger needles and work in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) until piece measures about 6 1/2 in.

(16.5 cm) from beg.
