13 single crochet = about 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
Cowl is worked back and forth in rows.
First and last rows are then seamed to form a tube.
A mock rib is created by working through the back loops of stitches.
COWL Chain 44.
Row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across - 43 single crochet at the end of this row.
Row 2: Chain 1, turn, working in back loops only, single crochet in each single crochet across.
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures about 24 in.
(61 cm) from beginning.Do not fasten off.
FINISHING Fold piece in half, matching last row to first row.
Working through both layers, slip stitch in each stitch across to join.
Note: If you prefer, you can sew ends of piece together.
Weave in ends.
