GAUGE:
14 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Openwork pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:
PATTERN STITCH Openwork Pattern (multiple of 2 sts) Set up Row (WS): K1, purl to last st, k1.

Row 1 (RS): K1, *yo, k1; rep from * to last st, k1.

Row 2: K1, purl to last st, k1.

Row 3: K1, *k2tog; rep from * to last st, k1.

Row 4: K1, * yo, k2tog; rep from * to last st, k1.

Row 5: K1, * yo, k2tog; rep from * to last st, k1.

Row 6: Knit.

Rep Rows 1-6 for Openwork patt.

Yo (yarn over) An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows: 1.

Bring yarn to front, between the needles.

2.

Take yarn to back, over the right needle.

This creates the new st.

You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

NOTES:
1.

Vest is worked in 3 pieces, Back and 2 Fronts.

2.

Each piece is worked in Openwork patt AND in Stripe Sequence to underarm.

3.

Beginning at underarm of each piece, the Openwork patt is continued, but the Stripe Sequence is discontinued.

4.

On both Fronts, garter edging is worked in one with Fronts.

5.

On both Fronts, the side, the neck and the armhole shaping are all worked AT THE SAME TIME.

This is not difficult, but does require that you keep careful track of which row you are on.

6.

When you see '0 times' in the instructions, this means that for your specific size, no action needs to be taken.

7.

When you see '- 12 sts' in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.
