GAUGE:
14 sc + 20 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:
sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:
Hat was designed as an improvisational, witty piece.

With all listed colors of yarn, you can make at least 2 Hats, and perhaps even a shorter third Hat.

We’ve listed the colors in the order that we used them, but we encourage you to have fun, to break the ‘rules’ by changing colors as you like!

INSTRUCTIONS

HAT With A, or color as desired, ch 61.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across.

Place marker in last st.

You will now be working in rnds, this will be the beg of rnd marker.

Move the marker up as each rnd is completed.

Being careful not to twist sts, join with sl st in top of beg ch.

Rnd 1: Sc in first st of Row 1 and each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 60 sts.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.

Rep Rnd 2, changing color as desired, until piece measures about 6 1/2 in.

(16.5 cm) from beg.

Note: The markers you place on the next rnd should be a different color than the beg of the rnd marker.

Next Rnd: Ch 1, *sc in each of next 8 sts, sc2tog over next 2 sts, place marker; rep from * around (Note that the end of the rnd marker will be the last marker) – 54 sts at the end of this rnd.

Next 12 Rnds: Changing colors as desired, rep Rnd 2.

Next Rnd: Ch 1, *sc to 2 sts before next marker, sc2tog over next 2 sts; rep from * around – 48 sts at the end of this rnd.

Continuing to change color as desired, rep last 13 rnds 3 times – 30 sts rem.

Working over rem 30 sts, and continuing to change color as desired, rep Rnd 2 until piece measures about 20 in.

(51 cm) from beg, or desired length.

Last Rnd: Sc2tog around – 15 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail.

Thread yarn tail into blunt needle and weave through sts of last rnd.

Pull to gather and knot securely.

FINISHING Thread both of the yarn strands of one pompom into yarn needle and weave to inside of the Hat, then back through pompom - this stitch stabilizes the pompom.

Draw strands back through to wrong side of Hat and knot securely, rep once more.

In same way, sew 2 more pompoms to Hat.

Use beg yarn tail to sew ends of Row 1 together.

Weave in ends.
