8 sc = 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. Hat is worked in the rnd beg at top, then in rows for the back flap.


HAT Ch 5; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, work 8 sc in ring; do not join, work in continuous rnds (spiral).

Place marker for beg of rnd.

Move marker up as work progresses.

Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around - 16 sc at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 3: *Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around - 24 sc.

Rnd 4: *Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around - 32 sc.

Rnd 5: *Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around - 40 sc.

Rnd 6: Sc in each sc around.

Rep Rnd 6 until piece measures 9 in.

(23 cm) from beg.

Remove marker.

Back Flap Row 1 (RS): Sc in next 20 sts; leave remaining sts unworked.

Rows 2 and 3: Ch 1, turn, sk first st, sc in each st to last 2 sts, sk next st, sc in last st - 16 sc at the end of Row 3.

Edging (WS): Ch 1, turn, sc evenly spaced around all edges of Hat and back flap; join with sl st in first sc.Fasten off.

FINISHING Following package directions, make a large size pom-pom.

Twisted Cord Cut a 56 in.

(142 cm) length of yarn.

Fold length in half and knot about 1 in.

(2.5 cm) from each end.

Slip one end over a doorknob and slip a pencil through the other end.

Turn the pencil to twist the strands clockwise until they are tightly twisted.

Keeping the strands taut, fold the piece in half, remove the pencil and allow the cord to twist on itself.

Tie pom-pom to one end of twisted cord.

Tie or sew opposite end of twisted cord to top of Hat.

Weave in ends.
