6 hdc + 5 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm). One Square = about 26 x 26 in. (66 x 66 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
hdc2tog (hdc 2 sts together) (Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) 2 times, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.
hdc3tog (hdc 3 sts together) (Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) 3 times, yarn over and draw through all 7 loops on hook – 2 sts decreased.
Four squares are crocheted separately, then sewn together following Assembly Diagram.
Each Square is worked in 2 triangular sections.
Stitches are increased on one edge in the first half of the first section then decreased on the same edge in the second half to make the first triangle.
The second section is worked beginning across the long straight edge of the first triangle.
Stitches are decreased on both edges of the second triangle.
