GAUGE:
16 sts + 32 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter St (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them together - 1 st decreased.

kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st - 1 st increased.

NOTES:
1.

Afghan is worked in 3 pieces: 2 Corner Pieces and a Center Strip, then sewed together.

2.

A circular needle is used to accommodate the number of sts.

Work back and forth in rows on circular needle as if working on straight needles.

3.

Pieces are worked in intarsia colorwork.

When working in intarsia, use a separate ball of yarn for each section of color.

Before beginning, wind A and L into 3 separate balls, and B and K into 2 separate balls.

When changing color, twist strands on WS to prevent holes.

4.

Corner Pieces are worked beg at one wide edge.

Sts are decreased on one edge to form the diagonal.

Then sts are picked up across the diagonal edge to beg stripes.

5.

Center Strip is worked diagonally from one short end across to other short end.

6.

A border is worked along each side of completed Afghan.
