GAUGE:
12 sts + 18 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter stitch (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:
sk2p Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over – 2 sts decreased.

4/4 LC (4 over 4 left cross) Slip 4 sts to cable needle and hold in front of work, k4, then k4 from cable needle.

RT (Right Twist) K2tog and leave on left needle, then with right needle, go between the 2 sts and k the first st again.

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUE 3-Needle Bind Off With RS together, hold in one hand 2 needles with equal number of sts on each.

With 3rd needle, knit tog 1 st from each needle, *knit tog 1 st from each needle, pass first st worked over 2nd to bind off; rep from * across.

Cut yarn and pull through last st to secure.

NOTES:
1.

Brim of Hat is worked in cable pattern, back and forth in rows.

Ends of brim are joined by working a 3-Needle Bind Off, then sts are picked up along one edge for the crown (top of Hat).

2.

Cable pattern can be worked from the written instructions or by following the chart.

When following the chart, work RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right.

3.

Crown of Hat is worked in the round on double pointed needles.

4.

When you see "– 12 sts" in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.
