Additional Materials
Double pointed knitting needles size 10.5 (6.5 mm), set of 5
11 sts + 18 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd), using larger needles. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

skp Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch – 1 st decreased.

PATTERN STITCH K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds (worked over a multiple of 2 sts) Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUE 3-Needle Bind Off With RS together, hold in one hand 2 needles with an equal number of sts on each.

With 3rd needle, knit tog 1 st from each needle, *knit tog 1 st from each needle, pass first st worked over 2nd to bind off; rep from * across.

Cut yarn and pull through last st to secure.

Hat is worked in the rnd with double pointed needles.

When knitting in the round on double pointed needles (dpns), your sts should be divided fairly evenly onto the needles.

When working with a set of 5 dpn, your sts should be divided among 4 needles.

The total number of sts will not always be evenly divisible by the number of dpns that you are using – this is not a problem! Simply divide your sts as evenly as possible, you will still create a symmetrical ‘tube’ of knitting.

HAT With smaller double pointed needles, cast on 56 sts.

Divide sts onto 4 needles, with 14 sts on each needle.

Place marker for beg of rnd.

Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.

Work in K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds for 10 rnds.

Change to larger double pointed needles and St st worked in rnds (k every rnd).

Work until piece measures about 7 in.

(18 cm) from beg.

Shape Crown (top of Hat) Rnd 1 (Dec): On needle 1, skp, k to end; on needle 2, k to last 2 sts, k2tog; on needle 3, work same as needle 1; on needle 4, work same as needle 2 – 52 sts at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnds 3 and 4: Rep Rnds 1 and 2 – 48 sts.

Rnds 5-7: Rep Rnd 1 – 36 sts at the end of Rnd 7.

Rnd 8 (Dec): On needle 1, skp, k to last 2 sts, skp; on needle 2, k2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog; on needle 3, work same as needle 1; on needle 4, work same as needle 2 – 28 sts.

Rnd 9: Rep Rnd 8 – 20 sts.
