8 sts + 12 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) over pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
Piece is worked as a rectangle and then seamed to make Cowl.
One end of piece is shaped by working a sloped bind off.
With yarn in front (wyif) refers to the side of the work facing you as you work the row; with yarn in back (wyib) refers to the side of the work that is away from you as you work the row.
To move yarn from front to back or back to front, bring yarn between needles.
Take care not to wrap yarn over a needle, this could create an additional st.
COWL Cast on 32 sts.
Row 1 (RS): K to last st, sl 1 wyib.
Row 2: P to last st, sl 1 wyif.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 14 in.
(35.5 cm) from beg.
Place a marker at end of the next RS (knit) row.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 42 in.
(106.5 cm) from beg, end with a RS row as the last row you work.
Sloped Bind Off Next Row (WS): Sl the first 2 sts to right hand needle and using tip of left hand needle, sl the 2nd st over the first st for the first bound-off st, then bind off next 3 sts as usual.
Next row (RS): Knit.
Rep last 2 rows until all sts are bound off.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail.
FINISHING Following diagram, pin bound-off edge to side edge of piece, easing bound-off edge to fit between marker and cast-on edge.
Sew bound-off end in place.
Weave in ends.
