GAUGE:
20 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:
Knitted Cord (on double pointed needles) Working with 2 double pointed needles, cast on specified number of sts.

Knit the sts.

Do not turn work.

*Slide sts to other end of needle and knit them, pulling yarn tightly across the back of the work, (do not turn work); rep from * until cord measures desired length.

Chain StitchThread needle and bring from back to front through piece.

*Hold short length of yarn on front forming a small loop.

Insert needle back into where it last came out, do not pull tight.

Bring needle back through work and through small loop; repeat from * until chain is desired length.

NOTES:
1.

Afghan, including borders, is worked in one piece.

A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts.

Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.

2.

Fish, Octopus and Sun Charts are worked in intarsia colorwork, following chart.

Use a separate ball of yarn for each color section.

Twist yarns on WS to prevent holes.

Do not carry unused color(s) across WS of work.

3.

For intarsia colorwork, wind B into 3 separate balls before beginning.

4.

When working from Charts, work in St st, reading RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right.

Repeats of Fish Chart will be worked in different colors than shown on chart.

On one repeat of Fish Chart, RS of chart will be read from left to right and WS from right to left to change the direction of the fish.

5.

Wave Chart is worked in stranded colorwork, carrying unused color across WS of work.

6.

End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.
