20 sts + 36 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

Chain Stitch Thread needle and bring from back to front through piece.

*Hold short length of yarn on front forming a small loop.

Insert needle back into where it last came out, do not pull tight.

Bring needle back through work and through small loop; repeat from * until chain is desired length.

French Knot Thread needle and bring from back to front through knitted piece.

Wrap yarn around needle 3 times, insert needle back into knitted piece close to where it emerged.

Tighten knot.

kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st – 1 st increased.

Knitted Cord (on double pointed needles) Working with 2 double pointed needles, cast on specified number of sts.

Knit the sts.

Do not turn work.

*Slide sts to other end of needle and knit them, pulling yarn tightly across the back of the work, (do not turn work); rep from * until cord measures desired length.

Scarf is worked in one piece in Garter st (k every row).

Fish and octopus charts are worked in intarsia colorwork, following chart.

Use a separate ball of yarn for each color section.

Twist yarns on WS to prevent holes.

Do not carry unused color(s) across WS of work.

When working from charts, work in Garter st and read RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right.

When you see "– 12 sts" in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.

SCARF With straight needles and C, cast on 12 sts.

Knit 2 rows.

Increase Row 1 (RS): K1, kfb, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1 – 14 sts at the end of this row.

Row 2: Knit.

Row 3-12: Rep Rows 1 and 2 – 24 sts at the end of Row 12.

With C, work in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures about 4 1/2 in.

(11.5 cm) from beg.

Octopus Chart Next Row (RS): With A, work Row 1 of Octopus Chart across row.

Continue to work in Garter st and chart until 14 rows of Octopus Chart have been completed.

With B only, work in Garter st until piece measures about 33 in.

(84 cm) from beg, end with a WS row as the last row you work.

Fish Chart Next Row (RS): With B, k4, work Row 1 of Fish Chart across next 16 sts, with B, k4.

Keeping first and last 4 sts in B and rem sts in Fish Chart, work in Garter st until 14 rows of Fish Chart have been completed.

With B only, work in Garter st for 4 rows.

Decrease Row (RS): K1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 22 sts.
