9 hdc + 6 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
Scarf and Pockets are worked separately.
When working the Pockets, the yarn color is changed every 2 rows to make stripes.
To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over.
Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete st.
Continue with the new color, carrying the color not in use along the side edge of piece until next needed.
STEP 1 With B, ch 20.
STEP 2 Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg 2 ch count as first hdc), and in each ch across – 19 hdc.
STEP 3 Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), turn, hdc in next st and in each st to end of row.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures about 70 in.
(178 cm) from beg.
STEP 4 Make 2 Pockets.
With A, ch 20.
Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg 2 ch count as first hdc), and in each ch across – 19 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), turn, hdc in next st and in each st to end of row.
Change to B in last st of Row 2.
Rows 3 and 4: With B, ch 1, turn, sc in each st to end of row.
Change to A in last st of Row 4.
Rows 5 and 6: With A, ch 2 (count as first hdc), turn, hdc in next st and in each st to end of row.
Change to B in last st of Row 6.
Rows 7-22: Rep Rows 3-6.
STEP 5 Place a Pocket onto the RS of one end of Scarf, matching the Pocket edges to the edges of the Scarf.
With B, make a slip knot on hook.
From RS, insert hook through both thicknesses (the Pocket and the Scarf) at corner of Pocket, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook (this makes an sc); continuing to work through both thicknesses, work sc evenly spaced around the Pocket edge to join it to the Scarf.
In the same way, join the second Pocket to the opposite end of the Scarf.
FINISHING Weave in ends.
