Basketweave Cape

GAUGE:

9 sts and 15 rows = 4"/10cm over basketweave pat foll chart
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

BACK
Cast on 83 sts. Work in k1, p1 rib for 6 rows.
Work in basketweave pat as foll: Work first 4 sts of chart, work 8-st rep 9 times, work last 7 sts. Cont in pat as established until piece measures 6.5"/16.5cm from beg.

Side shaping
Dec 1 st each side on next row, then every 4th row 6 times more-69 sts. Work even until piece measures 14"/35.5cm from beg. Dec 1 st each side every other row 13 times-43 sts. Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 4 rows, 4 sts at beg of next 4 rows. Bind off rem 15 sts.

LEFT FRONTCast on 43 sts.
Row 1 (RS) Work in k1, p1 rib to last 3 sts, work 3 sts in garter st (for front band). Cont in pats as established for 5 more rows. Work in basketweave pat as foll: Next row (RS) Work 8-st rep of chart 5 times, cont last 3 sts in garter st. Cont in pats as established, work decs at side edge (beg of RS rows) as for back, AT SAME TIME, when 12 rows of basketweave pat have been worked-piece measures approx 5.25"/13.5cm from beg, work as foll:

Divide for arm slits
Next row (RS)
Work to last 18 sts, work next 3 sts in garter st (for edging), place rem 15 sts on a holder. Keeping 3 sts in garter st, work rem sts in pat (cont side dec) for 21 rows more. Place sts on a 2nd holder. Work sts from first holder as foll:
Next row (RS) Pick up 3 sts behind the 3 border sts, work to end-18 sts. Keeping picked-up sts in garter st, work for 21 rows more.
Joining row (RS) Work sts from first holder to last 3 sts, with sts from 2nd holder behind sts on first holder, *k next st on first holder tog with first st on 2nd holder; rep from * twice more, work rem sts on 2nd holder. Cont over all sts until piece measures 20"/50.5cm from beg, end with a RS row.

Neck shaping
Next row (WS)
Bind off 5 sts (neck edge), work to end. Cont to bind off from neck edge 2 sts once, dec 1 st every other row twice.

RIGHT FRONT
Work to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping and placement of garter st border and arm slits. Work a buttonhole 4 rows before neck shaping as foll:

Buttonhole row (RS) K3, bind off 2 sts, work to end. On the foll row, cast on 2 sts over bound-off sts.

COLLAR
Cast on 39 sts. Work in k1, p1 rib for 2 rows. Cont in rib, binding off 2 sts at beg of next 6 rows, 3 sts at beg of next 4 rows-15 sts. Work 2 rows even. Cast on 3 sts at beg of next 4 rows, 2 sts at beg of next 6 rows. Work 2 rows even. Bind off loosely in rib.

FINISHING
Sew side seams. Fold collar in half widthwise and sew folded edge around neck. Sew button to left front opposite buttonhole.

the basketweave is beautiful, but the cape is just huge. Trying to figure out how to cut it down without having to rip the whole thing apart.
Also agree that the arm holes would be better further out to the sides.
