GAUGE:

16 sc + 20 rows = 4" (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

dec 1 sc (Insert hook in next st, yo, draw yarn through st) twice, yo, draw yarn through all 3 loops on hook.

beg popcorn Ch 3, 3 dc in st or space indicated, drop loop from hook, insert hook in beg ch 3, draw dropped loop through.

popcorn 4 dc in st or space indicated, drop loop from hook, insert hook in first dc or 4-dc group, draw dropped loop through.

beg popcorn for Afghan Border Ch 3, 4 dc in same space or st, drop loop from hook, insert hook in 3rd ch of beg ch-3, draw dropped loop through.

popcorn for Afghan Border 5 dc in st or space indicated, drop loop from hook, insert hook from front to back in first dc made, draw dropped loop through.


SWEATER

BACK

With B, ch 43.

Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2 Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Continue in sc until 8" from beg.

Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT

With B, ch 21.

Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Continue in sc until 6½" from beg.

Shape neck

Next Row (RS) Slip st across first 3 sts, sc to end of row. Ch 1, turn.

Next Row Sc to within last 2 sts, turn.

Next Row Slip st across first 2 sts, sc to end of row. Ch 1, turn.

Continue in sc, dec 1 sc at neck edge every row 3 times – 10 sts remain.

Work even in sc until Right Front measures same as Back.

Fasten off.

LEFT FRONT

Work to correspond to Right Front, reversing shaping.

SLEEVES

With B, ch 25.

Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 24 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2 Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Continue in sc, inc 1 sc each end every 4 rows 7 times – 38 sts.

Work even in sc until Sleeve measures 6¾".

Fasten off.

FINISHING

Sew Sleeve seams.

Sleeve Edging

Rnd 1 With RS facing, join B with a slip st at wrist edge and work 25 sc evenly spaced.

Rnd 2 Sc in first sc, *ch 3, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around, end slip st in first sc.

Fasten off.

Sew Fronts to Back at shoulders.

Mark Front and Back at side seams 4½" down from shoulder seam for Sleeve placement. Sew Sleeves between markers.

Sew side seams.

Outer Edging

Row 1 With RS facing, join B with slip st at left side seam, work 1 row sc along Back and Right Front lower edge to next corner, work 3 sc in corner; then working up Right Front opening edge *(ch 2, skip 2 rows) for buttonhole, sc for 1" *, repeat from * to * 3 more times, (ch 2, skip 2 rows) for buttonhole, continue in sc to next corner; work 3 sc in corner, sc around neck edge to next corner, 3 sc in corner, sc down Left Front opening edge and Left Front lower edge, ending at left side seam. Ch 1, do not turn.

Row 2 Work 1 row sc, working 1 sc in each st and 2 sc in each ch-space, working 3 sc in each corner. Ch 1, do not turn.

Row 3 Repeat Rnd 2 for Sleeve Edging. Fasten off.

HAT

Crown

With B, ch 4 and join in a ring with 1 slip st in first ch.

Work 8 sc in ring.

Place a marker at beg of rnd and move it up every rnd.

Rnd 1 *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around – 12 sc.

Rnd 2 *1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around – 16 sc.

Rnd 3 *1 sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around – 20 sc.

Rnd 4 *1 sc in each of next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around – 24 sc.

Rnd 5 *1 sc in each of next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around – 28 sc.

Rnd 6 *1 sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around – 32 sc.

Rnd 7 *1 sc in each of next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around – 36 sc.

Rnd 8 *1 sc in each of next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around – 40 sc.

Rnd 9 *1 sc in each of next 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around – 44 sc.

Rnd 10 *1 sc in each of next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around – 48 sc.

Rnd 11 *1 sc in each of next 12 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around – 52 sc.

Rnd 12 *1 sc in each of next 13 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around – 56 sc.

Rnd 13 *1 sc in each of next 14 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * around – 60 sc.

Continue even in sc until Hat measures 5¾" from center of crown.

Fasten off.

Edging

With RS facing, join B with a slip st in corner and repeat Rnd 2 for Sleeve Edging.

Flowers – Make 14

6 for Sweater; 8 for Hat

With A, ch 5.

Next Row 5 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 3, slip st in same ch – beg petal made, *ch 4, 4 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 3, slip st in same ch (petal made); repeat from * 3 more times, slip st in first ch of beg ch.

Fasten off, leaving ends long enough to sew as pictured.

Using large-eyed, blunt needle and double strand of C, make 3 french knots in the center of each flower, wrapping the yarn needle 3 times for each knot.

Sew 8 flowers on Hat and 6 Flowers on Sweater, as pictured.

AFGHAN

SQUARE – Make 20

With C, ch 10 and join in a ring with a slip st n first ch.

Rnd 1 Work beg popcorn in ring, ch 3, (popcorn in ring, ch 3) 7 times, join with a slip st to top of beg popcorn. Fasten off.

Rnd 2 With RS facing, join B with a slip st in any ch-3 space, work (popcorn, ch 3, popcorn) in same space, *changing to A in last popcorn, ch 1, 3 dc in ch space, ch 1, change to B, (popcorn, ch 3, popcorn) in next space*, repeat from * to * 2 times more, end with A, ch 1, 3 dc in last space, ch 1, slip st to first popcorn (3 dc between popcorns). Fasten off.

Rnd 3 With RS facing, join B with a slip st in first ch-3 space, (beg popcorn, ch 3, popcorn) in same space, changing to A in last popcorn, ch 1, *2 dc in next ch space, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, 2 dc in next ch-space, ch 1, change to B, (popcorn, ch 3, popcorn) in next space*, repeat from * to * 2 times more, end with A, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-space, dc in each of next 3 dc, 2 dc in next ch-space, ch 1, slip st to first popcorn – 7 dc between popcorns. Fasten off.

Rnd 4 With RS facing, join B with a slip st in first ch-3 space, (beg popcorn, ch 3, popcorn) in same space, changing to A in last popcorn, ch 1, *2 dc in next ch-space, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, 2 dc in next ch-space, ch 1, change to B, (popcorn, ch 3, popcorn) in next space*, repeat from * to * 2 times more, end with A, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-sp, dc in each of next 7 dc, 2 dc in next ch-space, ch 1, slip st to first popcorn – 11 dc between popcorns. Fasten off.

Rnd 5 With RS facing, join B with a slip st in first ch-3 space, (beg popcorn, ch 3, popcorn) in same space, changing to A in last popcorn, ch 1, *2 dc in next ch-space, 1 dc in each of next 11 dc, 2 dc in next ch-space, ch 1, change to B, (popcorn, ch 3, popcorn) in next space*, repeat from * to * 2 times more, end with A, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-space, dc in each of next 11 dc, 2 dc in next ch-space, ch 1, slip st to first popcorn – 15 dc between popcorns. Fasten off B.

Rnd 6 With RS facing, join C with a slip st in first ch-3 space, (beg popcorn, ch 3, popcorn) in same space, changing to A in last popcorn, *2 dc in next ch-space, 1 dc in each of next 15 dc, 2 dc in next ch-space, ch 1, change to C, (popcorn, ch 3, popcorn) in next space*, repeat from * to * 2 times more, end with A ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-space, 1 dc in each of next 15 dc, 2 dc in next ch-space, ch 1, slip st to first popcorn – 19 dc between popcorns. Fasten off.

Finishing

Sew Squares together, 4 across by 5 high.

Beg Rnd With RS of Afghan facing, join C with a slip st in top right corner, *work 89 sc evenly spaced to next corner, 3 sc in corner, work 104 sc evenly spaced across long edge to next corner, 3 sc in corner*, repeat from * to * once more, end slip st to beg slip st. Fasten off.
