SKILL LEVEL:  Easy

SIZE: Small, Medium, Large
Circumference 18 (20, 21) inches [45.5 (51, 53.5) cm]

Read directions carefully! Small size beret ends after 16 rounds; Medium after 18 rounds; Large after 22 rounds.
Note: Pattern is written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.

GAUGE:

16 dc + 12 rows = 4 inches [10 cm].

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Beg Puff St

 Ch 3, (yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops) 4 times, yo and draw through all 5 loops on hook, ch 1.

Puff St (Yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops) 5 times, yo and draw through all 6 loops on hook, ch 1.

sc2tog (sc decrease) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.


BERET

Note Join with slip st in first st of each rnd.

Ch 3. Join with slip st to form ring.

Rnd 1 Ch 1, work 6 sc in ring.

Rnd 2 Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around – 12 dc.

Rnd 3 Ch 3, 2 dc in each st around – 24 dc.

Rnd 4 Ch 3, 2 dc in first st, dc in next st, (2 dc in next st, dc in next st) around – 36 dc.

Rnd 5 Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 4, skip 2 sts, (sc in next st, ch 4, skip 2 sts) around – 12 ch-spaces.

Rnd 6 Slip st into ch-space, ch 3, 4 dc in same ch-space, ch 1, skip next st, (5 dc in next ch-space, ch 1, skip next st) around.

Rnd 7 Beg Puff St in 5 dc, *ch 3, dc in ch1-space, ch 3, Puff St; repeat from * around, ch 3, dc in ch1-space, ch 3; join with slip st in top of Beg Puff St – 12 Puff Sts.

Rnd 8 Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), *dc in center of ch3-space, ch 4, dc in center of next ch3-space, ch 1, (dc, ch 3, dc) in top of Puff St, ch 1; repeat from * around to top of last Puff St, (dc, ch 3) in last Puff St; join with slip st in 3rd ch of beg ch 4.
