4.75 stitches + 4 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) using 2 strands of yarn held together. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
Entire Afghan is worked with 2 strands of yarn held together.
Editor's Note: When creating fringe using Homespun please note that because of the texture of the yarn the fringe will fray when cut.
If you prefer a non-frayed look you can knot the ends, knit or crochet a fringe, or use hairspray or fray check.

Cut yarn, leaving several inches to be worked with Tassel in corner.
Cut 4 strands of yarn 36 inches long and 4 strands 18 inches long.
Cut remaining yarn into 18 inch lengths.
Divide into four equal groups.
Fold one of the 36 inch strands in half and lay it flat on table, placing 1 of the four groups over center of doubled strand and using that to carefully tie group tightly together in the middle with a double knot.
Hold ends of the doubled strand so knot becomes top of Tassel and grouped strands fall into place below it.
Take an 18 inches piece of yarn and wrap tightly around Tassel 1 1/4" below top knot to form Tassel neck.
Knot securely; thread ends onto needle and weave ends to center of Tassel.
Trim Tassel ends evenly.
Fasten 1 Tassel in chain-1 space in each corner of Afghan.
