GAUGE:
16 sc = 4" (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
INSTRUCTIONS
BERET
Topknot
Ch 4. Sc in 4th ch from hook to form ring. Sc in rnds until piece measures 3 1/4" from beg. Inc to 6 sts in last rnd. Place marker for beg of rnd.
Crown
Inc 6 sts evenly spaced. Repeat last rnd until there are 144 sts.
Brim
Dec 6 sts evenly spaced. Repeat last rnd until 72 sts remain.
Join with slip st, turn work inside out. With WS facing, work 5 rnds even.
Finishing
Tie topknot with an overhand knot. Tack end in place to underside of knot. Pull beret over 9" dinner plate. Lightly damp, allow to dry thoroughly. Weave in ends.
