CLOWN DOLL HEAD: With color C, ch 4. Join with sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1: 10 sc in ring. Do not join, but work around. Mark beg of rnds.
Rnd 2: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc (inc made); repeat from * around (15 sc).
Rnd 3: * 2 sc in next sc sc in next 2 sc; repeat from * around (20 sc).
Rnds 4-6: Sc in each sc.
Rnd 7: * Dec 1 in next 2 sts (to dec draw up a loop in each of next 2 sts yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook); repeat from * around (10 dc). Stuff head firmly.
Rnd 8: Sc and dec 5 sts as before, stuffing as you go . Fasten off leaving a sewing end. Draw sts on last rnd tightly together with yarn end; fasten off.
BODY DISCS
(make 12 with A, 13 with B):
Ch 4; join with sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1: Work 12 sc in ring. Join with sl st to first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, work (2 dc, ch 1) in first sc, work (3 dc, ch 1) in each remaining sc. Join to top of ch-3.
Fasten off.
RUFFLED COLLAR:
With B, work as for Body Discs, but do not fasten off.
Rnd 3: Ch 3 dc in first dc 2 dc in each remaining dc. Cut B; attach A.
Rnd 4: With A sl st in front loop only of each st around. Fasten off.
POMPOMS:
With A, make five 1½-inch [3.8 cm] diameter pompoms and one 3-inch [7.5 cm] diameter pompom.
HAT:
With B, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join, but work around. Mark beg of rnds.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc (12 sc).
Rnds 3-7: Sc in each sc.
Rnd 8 (brim): 2 sc in each sc. Fasten off.
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS:
Thread one end of cord through 6 discs (alternating colors A and B), under holding thread of one small pompom then back through same 6 discs (1 leg made). Continuing with same cord end repeat for 2nd leg. With both cord ends in yarn needle string 5 more discs, alternating colors, for body. Then with single cord from one leg thread 4 more discs and pompom, then return through same 4 discs for arm. Repeat with other cord for 2nd arm. Now thread both cords down through body, under cord between legs and return up through body. Adjust cords to form symmetrical figure about 6" tall, with no cords showing. Thread both cords through collar, center of head and center of large pompom (flattened for hair). Tie a knot at top of head. Trim hair pompom in front for bangs. Squash hat to flatten top and sew to top side of head. Embroider "plus sign" black eyes, curved red mouth and rounded nose (make French knot; cover with satin stitches). Knot cord ends together 4½ inch above head. Securely attach pompom.
