GAUGE:
10 single crochet = 4 inches (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
NOTES:
Slip stitch last single crochet of each round to the first and chain 1. Do not turn. Mark first stitch of each round with stitch marker, safety pin, or strand of contrasting yarn. Move marker at beginning of each round.
INSTRUCTIONS
CAP
With larger hook, chain 3 and join to form ring.
Crown shaping
Round 1 Work 6 single crochet into center of ring.
Round 2 Work 2 single crochet in each single crochet around - 12 stitches.
Round 3 *Work 1 single crochet in next single crochet, 2 single crochet into next single crochet; repeat from * around - 18 stitches.
Round 4 *Work 1 single crochet in each of next 2 single crochet, 2 single crochet into next single crochet; repeat from * around - 24 stitches.
Round 5 *Work 1 single crochet in each of next 3 single crochet, 2 single crochet into next single crochet; repeat from * around - 30 stitches.
Round 6 *Work 1 single crochet in each of next 4 single crochet, 2 single crochet into next single crochet; repeat from * around - 36 stitches.
Round 7 *Work 1 single crochet in each of next 5 single crochet, 2 single crochet into next single crochet; repeat from * around - 42 stitches. For Size Child M only, skip to Round 10.
Round 8 *Work 1 single crochet in each of next 6 single crochet, 2 single crochet into next single crochet; repeat from * around - 48 stitches. For size Adult S only, skip to Round 10.
Round 9 *Work 1 single crochet in each of next 7 single crochet, 2 single crochet into next single crochet; repeat from * around - 54 stitches.
Round 10 Work 1 single crochet into each single crochet around.
Repeat Round 10 until Hat measures 5 1/4 (6, 7) inches from beginning. Do not end off.
RIBBING
Note Ribbing is attached to Crown every other row as you work.
With smaller hook, chain 9. Single crochet into 2nd chain from hook and each chain across - 8 single crochet. Insert hook into next stitch (on Crown) and pull up loop (2 loops on hook), insert hook into following Crown stitch, pull up loop and draw through loops on hook (double slip stitch).
Next Row Chain 1, turn. Single crochet into back loop of each single crochet across rib.
Next Row Chain 1, turn. Single crochet into back loop of each single crochet across; double slip stitch next 2 Crown stitches.
Repeat these two rows until you have worked all around the Hat and then slip stitch first and last rows together for seam. Weave in ends.
POMPOM
Cut a piece of cardboard 2 1/4" x 3 inches. Wrap the yarn around the 2 1/4" width; the more times you wrap, the fuller your pompom will be. Cut yarn, leaving an 18 inches end. Slide pompom off cardboard carefully and wrap end around middle, securing it lightly. Clip through loops on both ends. Sew pompom to top of hat.
