Christmas Stocking

Lion Brand® Jiffy®

GAUGE:

10 sts = 3 inches (7.5 cm) in single crochet. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:


FPDC (Front post double crochet)
Yo, insert hook from the front and from right to left around the “post inches of the stitch in row below. Complete the dc from this position.
BPDC (Back post double crochet) Yo, insert hook from the back and from right to left around the “post inches of the stitch in row below. Complete the dc from this position.

TOP
With A, ch 38. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across - 37 sc. Ch 1, turn. Work 1 more row sc with A. Note Do not cut A; carry on side of work. Always begin the row with A on side where yarn is carried. Change to B, ch 1, turn.

Row 1 Work 1 row sc with B, cut B. Change to A.
Row 2
Sc in 1st sc, (sc in row below next sc, sc in next st) across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3 Sc in all sts across. Change to C, ch 1, turn.
Row 4 Work 1 row sc with C, cut C. Change to A.
Row 5 Same as Row 2.
Row 6 Same as Row 3, changing to B instead of C, ch 1, turn.
Rep Rows 1-6 until there are a total of 4-B rows and 3-C rows, ending with Row 3. Fasten off.

HEEL
Note
Heel is worked on last and first 9 sts of Top.
Skip first 28 sts, attach C with ch 1 in next st. Work 1 sc in this and rem 8 sts. Bring beg of row around to end of row and sc in first 9 sts. Ch 1, turn.
Row 1 Sc in next 12 sts, ch 1, turn.
Row 2 Sc in next 6 sts, ch 1, turn.
Row 3 Sc in next 7 sts, sc in next st on side of sts just worked, ch 1, turn.
Row 4 Sc in next 8 sts, sc in next st on side of sts just worked, ch 1, turn.
Row 5 Sc in next 9 sts, sc in next st on side of sts just worked, ch 1, turn.
Continue in this manner, increasing number of sts with each row, until all 18 sts are worked. Fasten off.

Heel Decrease With A, attach yarn in first st to the right of heel, ch 1, draw up a loop, draw up a loop in first st of heel, yo, draw through all loops on hook (sc dec made), sc across next 16 heel sts, draw up a loop in last heel st, draw up a loop in st to left of heel, yo, draw through all loops on hook. Ch 1, turn. Sc back across 18 sts. Fasten off.

FOOT
Skip first 9 sts of heel, attach C in next st, ch 1, sc in this and rem 8 heel sts, sc across 17 sts of Top, sc across rem 9 heel sts (35 sts). Cut C.

Work in pattern as before, beg with Row 5. When there are a total of 2 rows each of C and B AFTER heel, end with Row 3. Fasten off.

TOE
Change to C. *Work sc dec, sc over next 14 sc, sc dec, ch 1, turn. Cont to work on one side of toe ONLY, work a sc dec on both sides of work every row until there are 2 sts rem. Fasten off.*

For 2nd half of Toe, beg in last st of first half, rep from * to *.

ROSETTE
With C, make 2 chains of 110. Holding chains tog, fold over several times to make a rosette. Gather and tie securely in center with a single strand of C. Sew 3 larger bells in center of rosette. Sew smaller bell to each of 4 ch ends.

FINISHING

Ribbing Attach C with ch 3 in 1st ch at TOP beg ch edge (this counts as 1st dc), dc in rem 36 sts along ch edge. Ch 2, turn.

Post Stitch Rib Row In 2nd st of row below, work 1 BPDC, (work 1 FPDC in next st, work 1 BPDC in next st) across, ending 1 FPDC in last st. Ch 2, turn.

Work 1 more row in established post st ribbing. Fasten off.

Sew back, foot, and toe seams. Sew rosette to top edge of stocking.

Hanger With C, ch 10. Sew to inside back of stocking.

This makes the cutest stocking! I've made 2 so far. Used a brushed-type yarn in Christmas pastels and it turned out beautifully. Lots of compliments!
