Ridged Scarf and Stocking Hat

Lion Brand® Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick®

GAUGE:

10 sts + 5 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in pattern.

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

FPdc (front post dc) Yo, working from front to back to front, insert hook around post of st of row below, yo and draw up a loop, (yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip st behind the FPdc.

BPdc (back post dc) Yo, working from back to front to back, insert hook around post of st of row below, yo and draw up a loop, (yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip st in front of the BPdc.


SCARF

With A, ch 17.

Row 1 Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 15 sts.

Row 2 Ch 2, FPdc around each of next 2 sts, BPdc around each of next 3 sts, FPdc around each of next 3 sts, BPdc around each of next 3 sts, FPdc around each of next 2 sts, hdc in last st; turn.

Row 3 Ch 2, BPdc around each of next 2 sts, FPdc around each of next 3 sts, BPdc around each of next 3 sts, FPdc around each of next 3 sts, BPdc around each of next 2 sts, hdc in last st; turn.

Rows 4-105 Repeat Rows 2-3 for 51 more times, working in the following color sequence: 3 rows B, 3 rows A. (There will be 35 stripes total.)

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

FRINGE

Cut 16 12 inches [30.5 cm] strands each of A and B. Holding 1 strand of each color together, fold strands in half and, with crochet hook, pull fold through Scarf, forming a loop. Pull ends of fringe through this loop. Pull to tighten. Attach fringe in every other stitch along both short ends of Scarf.

HAT

Note Hat is worked on right side only. Do not turn at end of each row. Carry unused color up inside of Hat.

With B, ch 4; join with slip st to form ring.

Rnd 1 Work 8 sc into ring; join with slip st in first sc – 8 sc.

Rnd 2 Ch 3, dc in same sc, 2 dc in each of next 7 sc; join with slip st to top of beg ch 3 – 16 dc.

Rnd 3 Ch 3, FPdc around next dc, (dc in next dc, FPdc around next dc) 7 times; join with slip st to top of beg ch 3.

Drop B; join A.

Rnd 4 Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 FPdc around next FPdc, (2 dc in next dc, 2 FPdc around next FPdc) 7 times; join with slip st to top of beg ch 3 – 32 dc.

Rnd 5 Ch 3, dc in next dc, FPdc around each of next 2 FPdc, (dc in each of next 2 dc, FPdc around each of next 2 FPdc) 7 times; join with slip st to top of beg ch 3.

Drop A; pick up B.

Rnd 6 With B, repeat Rnd 5.

Rnd 7 Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc, FPdc around next FPdc, 2 FPdc around next FPdc, (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, FPdc around next FPdc, 2 FPdc around next FPdc) 7 times; join with slip st to top of beg ch 3 – 48 dc.

Note Work Rnds 8-15 in the following color sequence: 2 rnds A, 2 rnds B.

Rnds 8-15 Ch 3, dc in each dc and FPdc around each FPdc around; join with slip st to top of beg ch 3.

Rnd 16 With B, sc in each dc and FPdc around; join with slip st to first sc.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

I love this scarf!! It is perfect for a mans gift! I did not find it to be "stiff" but thick as it should be. It wraps and hangs nicely and is a gorgeous pattern. As my first time working front and back stitch posts, it was extremely easy and worked up quick and perfectly. I used the yarn and hook suggested but did this one in navy and wood. The colors were beautiful together. If it seems stiff, you may want to use a Q hook and it will be a bit thinner, but I love it as is!!
