When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Sweatshirt To Soiree Reviewed by Tabatha Butler on 2011-01-13
I've been knitting a month and decided to give this one a try with a few alterations for my daughter. It didn't end up as loose looking as the one on the pattern, but she loves it. I need some work on the arm holes and the seams, but I think I did an ok job for my first sweater. I would have liked a little more direction in the seams and needed the size 15 circular needles not just the 11's, but other than that, it wasn't too bad. I figure I needed more help because I have only been doing this for a month.
