Felted Checkers Set

GAUGE:

12 sts to 4 in. [10 cm] over sc using size K/10.5 [6.5mm] crochet hook (before felting) BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

Note When changing colors, draw new color through 2 lps on hook to complete last sc.

MAKE THE BOARD

Make 8 strips. With A, ch 8.
Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in ch across-- 7 sts. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 2–7 Skip first st, sc in next 6 sts, sc in top of ch-1 t-ch of row below-- 7 sts. Ch 1, turn.
Row 8 Skip first st, sc in next 6 sts, sc in top of ch-1 t-ch of row below changing to B-- 7 sts. Ch 1, turn. Rep row 2 seven times, then rep row 8 once changing to A. Cont to work in this manner until 8 blocks have been completed.

Fasten off.

FINISH THE BOARD
Sew strips tog, alternating directions and lining up intersections to achieve the checkerboard pat.

MAKE THE BORDER
With RS facing, join A with a sl st in any corner.
Rnd 1 Ch 1, *work 3 sc in corner, [work 8 sc along edge of next square] 8 times; rep from * around, 3 times more, ending last rep with 7 sc along edge of last square, join rnd with a sl st in first sc.
Rnds 2–3 Ch 1, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in each corner st, join rnd with a sl st in first sc.
Rnd 4 Rep rnd 2, joining rnd with a sl st in first sc changing to B. Rep rnd 2 4 times more. Fasten off.

MAKE THE CHECKERS
With A, ch 2.
Rnd 1
Work 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join rnd with a sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2
Ch 3, work 2 dc in each st around, join rnd with a sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. Fasten off. Make 11 more using A and 12 using B.

MAKE THE BAG
With B, ch 2.
Rnd 1
Work 9 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join rnd with a sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2
Ch 1, work 2 sc in each st around, join rnd with a sl st in first sc-- 18 sts.
Rnd 3
Ch 3, [work 2 dc in next st, dc in next st] 9 times, join rnd with a sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3-- 27 sts.
Rnd 4
Ch 3, [work 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] 9 times, join rnd with a sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3-- 36 sts.
Rnd 5
Ch 3, [work 2 dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts] 6 times, join rnd with a sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3-- 42 sts.
Rnd 6
[Ch 7, skip next 5 sts, sc in next st] 7 times.
Rnds 7–9
[Ch 7, sc in next ch-7 sp] 7 times.
Rnd 10
Rep rnd 7 changing to A.
Rnds 11–14
Rep rnd 7.
Rnd 15
[Ch 7, sc in next ch-7 sp] 6 times, ch 7, join rnd with a sl st in 4th ch of next ch-7 sp. Fasten off.

MAKE THE DRAWSTRING
With 2 strands of B held tog, make a ch 18 in. /45.5cm. Fasten off.

FELT THE PIECES
Fill washing machine to low water setting at a hot temperature. Add ¼ cup of a gentle detergent and 2 Tbs. of baking soda. Place checkers and drawstring in a zippered pillowcase cover. Place in washer the pillowcase cover, board, bag and also a pair of jeans to provide abrasion and balanced agitation. Use 15–20 minute wash cycle, including cold rinse and spin. Check measurements of pieces. If they are still bigger than finished measurements, repeat process with progressively shorter cycles, measuring every few minutes until measurements are achieved. Air-dry or machine-dry on a low setting. Steam-block to finished measurements.

FINISH THE BAG
Weave drawstring around last rnd of B; knot ends tog.
