Additional Materials
28" Knitting Board set at mid spacing of 1" with 4" bolts. Knit hook and crochet hook.
GAUGE:
2.3 sts=1 inch 2.5 rows=1 inch BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
NOTES:
Editor's Note: When creating fringe using Homespun please note that because of the texture of the yarn the fringe will fray when cut. If you prefer a non-frayed look you can knot the ends, knit or crochet a fringe, or use hairspray or fray check.
INSTRUCTIONS
AFGHAN
Cast On 84 Stitches (full 28" board)Place anchor yarn. (contrasting color, thick yarn.)
Work entire afghan in Stockinette Stitch for a total of 200 rows or until afghan is the size thatyou desire. Be sure to save (2) skeins of yarn for the fringe.Bind Off very loosely:Start at end opposite the yarn attachment. With crochet hook, lift (2) loopsalternating from one board to the other. Pull the loop closest to hook thru the other loop. Pick upone additional loop from opposite board. Pull (1) loop thru the other on crochet hook. Continue thisacross the board until only one loop remains. Pull yarn tail thru last loop for a knot. The yarntail will be worked into the fringe.Do same Bind Off at anchor yarn starting at end opposite the yarn tail.FRINGE:
Prepare the fringe from (2) skeins of yarn. Wrap yarn around a box or trash can that measuresapproximately 24" around. Wrap entire skein of yarn. Cut, so that you have strands approximately24" long. Place piece of tape around one end of strands. You can pull from it as you work thefringe.Each fringe is (2) strands of yarn. Place crochet hook into edge stitch at one end.Fold (2) strands so that they are not even. Fold in half and with crochet hook, pull the foldedloops thru the edge stitch on knitting. Pull the strands of yarn (4 once folded) thru the loop. Thiswill knot the fringe onto the afghan. Insert the crochet hook into next edge stitch. Proceed acrossthe end of afghan for about 1/3 of the edge. Move to opposite edge and work back to meet the othercompleted fringe. The result will be extremely thick and luxurious. Work opposite end of afghan with 2nd skein of yarn.
