Cardboard 6 in. [15 cm] wide for making pompom
4 sts + 8 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in seed stitch. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
Wind yarn from hank into a ball.
Cast on 19 sts.
Row 1 K 1, (p 1, k 1) across.
Repeat Row 1 until piece measures 11 1/4 inches [29 cm] from beginning.
Bind off all sts.
Cut a strip of cardboard 6" [15 cm] wide.
Wrap yarn around cardboard - the more wraps, the fuller your pompom will be.
Cut yarn leading to skein and carefully slide yarn off cardboard.
Cut a long piece of yarn and double it; carefully slide it under the center of the yarn and tie tightly with a double knot.
Clip the loops, fluff out your pompom, and trim.
Fold Hat in half and sew side and top seams.
Position Hat with side seam at center.
Using the tails of the knotted strand, attach pompom to corners at top edge of Hat, working through all layers.
Weave in ends.
