With A, cast on 32 (32, 36, 36) sts. Work rib and pattern stitch as for back, AT THE SAME TIME, increase 1 st each side every 4th row 9 (10, 8, 10) times, every 6th row 4 (4, 7, 7) times – 56 (60, 64, 68) sts. Work even in pattern until piece measures 11 (12, 13, 14)” from beginning. Bind off.

GAUGE:

20 stitches + 28 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in pattern stitch BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Color Stripe Pattern

Rows 1 & 3 (RS)

With B, knit.
Rows 2 & 4
With B, purl.
Rows 5-12 With C, knit.
Rows 13 & 15 With B, knit.
Rows 14 & 16 With B, purl.
Rows 17-24 With A, knit (Garter st).
Repeat Rows 1-24.

CARDIGAN
BACK

With A, cast on 60 (68, 76, 84) stitches. Work in k1, p1 rib for 1 inches, ending after a RS row. Purl 1 row, then work in color stripe pattern until piece measures 12½ (13½, 14½, 16 ½) inches from beginning, end after a WS row. Shape back neck Work in pattern across 17 (20, 24, 27) sts. Place center 26 (28, 28, 30) sts on holder. With second ball of yarn, work across remaining 17 (20, 24, 27) sts. Working both sides at same time, work even in pattern until piece measures 13 (14, 15, 17) inches from beginning. Bind off.

RIGHT FRONT

With A, cast on 28 (32, 36, 40) sts. Work as for back until piece measures 11 (12, 13, 15) inches from beginning, end after a WS row. Shape front neck Bind off 7 (8, 8, 9) sts. Continue working in pattern, AT THE SAME TIME, decrease 1 st at neck edge every other row 4 times - 17 (20, 24, 27) sts. Work even in pattern until piece measures same length as back. Bind off.

LEFT FRONT

Work as for right front until piece measures 11 (12, 13, 15) inches from beginning, end after a RS row. Shape neck as for right front.

SLEEVES

With A, cast on 32 (32, 36, 36) sts. Work rib and pattern stitch as for back, AT THE SAME TIME, increase 1 st each side every 4th row 9 (10, 8, 10) times, every 6th row 4 (4, 7, 7) times - 56 (60, 64, 68) sts. Work even in pattern until piece measures 11 (12, 13, 14) inches from beginning. Bind off.

FINISHING

Sew shoulder and side seams. Neckband With RS facing, and A, begin at right front and pick up 7 (8, 8, 9) sts along right front neck, 13 sts along right neck side edge, work across 26 (28, 28, 30) st of back neck holder, pick up 13 sts along left neck side edge and 7 (8, 8, 9) sts along left front neck - 66 (70, 70, 74) sts. Work neck band as follows: Row 1 Knit, dec 1 st at center back - (65, 69, 69, 73) sts. Work in k1, p1 rib for 1 inches. Bind off. Buttonband With RS facing and A, pick up 61 (65, 71, 81) sts along right front edge for boys or left front edge for girls. Row 1 *P 1, k 1; repeat from *, end p 1. Row 2 *K 1, p 1; reoeat from *, end k 1. Work in rib for 1 inches. Bind off. Buttonhole Band With RS facing and A, pick up 61 (65, 71, 81) st and work rib as for buttonband, working Row 5 as follows: Row 5 K 1 (3, 2, 1), k2tog, yarn over, *k 12 (12, 14, 17), k2tog, yarn over, repeat from *; end k 2 (4, 3, 2). Bind off. Mark front and back edges 5½ (6, 6½, 6¾) inches from shoulder seams. Sew sleeves between markers. Sew side and underarm seams. Sew on buttons.

HAT

With A, cast on 80 (90) sts. Work rib as for back. Purl 1 row, work 1 repeat of Color Stripe pattern.
Dec row (RS) Change to B and work as follows: *K2tog, k 8; repeat from * to end - 72 (81) sts. Next row Purl.

Dec row *K2tog, k 7; repeat from * to end - 64 (72) sts. Purl next row.
With C, work 8 rows in garter stitch. With B, work dec row: *K2tog, k 6; repeat from * to end - 56 (63) sts. Purl 1 row.

Dec row *K2tog, k 5; repeat from * to end - 48 (54) sts. Purl 1 row. With A, work 8 rows garter stitch. Change to B.
Dec row *K2tog, k 4; repeat from * to end - 40 (45) sts. Purl 1 row.
Dec row *K2tog, k 3; repeat from * to end - 32 (36) sts. Purl 1 row.
Dec row *K2tog, k 2; repeat from * to end - 24 (27) sts. Purl 1 row.
Dec row *K2tog, k 1; repeat from * to end - 16 (18) sts. Purl 1 row.
Dec row *K2tog; repeat from * to end - 8 (9) sts. Purl 1 row.
Dec row *K2tog; repeat from * to end - 4 (6) sts. Purl 1 row.
Cut yarn, thread end onto yarn needle. Draw through all stitches. Pull tightly. Sew in place.
Optional top knot Change to double-pointed needles and dec 1 (2) sts on next knit row. *Next row Knit. Slip stitches to beginning of row and pull yarn around back. Repeat from * until cord measures 2". Child size: Next row K3tog. Adult size: Next row K2tog twice. Next row K2tog and fasten off. Tie knot. Sew side seam and weave in end.

Can someone help me? I followed the directions and the sleeves do not set in correctly and the pic looks as though a drop sleeve is formed. Are they some directions missing?
