GAUGE: 9½ sts and 14 rows = 4" (10 cm) In St st (k on RS, p on WS).
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: PATTERN STITCH SEED STITCH Row 1 *K 1, p 1*; rep to end.
Row 2 K the purl sts and p the knit sts as they present themselves. Repeat Row 2 for pattern.
Note Slip first st at beg of each row. ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip the next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to the right needle; insert the left needle into the fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

Cont in St st until piece measures 11 (11½, 12, 12½, 13)" from beg. Shape armhole Bind off 2 (3, 3, 3, 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows; then bind off 2 (2, 2, 3, 3) sts at beg of foll 2 rows.
