GAUGE: 8 sts = 4 inches (10 cm) on size 10.5 needle in St st (k on RS, p on WS for flat pieces, k all st in the round). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

BERET Using smaller circular needles loosely cast on 52 sts. Place marker to indicate beg of rnd. Work in k1, p1 rib for 4 rnds. Inc 16 sts evenly spaced - 68 sts. Change to larger circular needle, and work even in St st for 3½ inches from beg. Crown Dec as follows (change to dpns as necessary): Dec Rnd 1 (K 15, k2tog) 4 times. Knit 1 rnd - 64 sts. Dec Rnd 2 (K 6, k2tog) 8 times. Knit 1 rnd56 sts. Dec Rnd 3 (K5, k2tog) 8 times; Knit 1 rnd - 48 sts. Continue dec 8 sts every other round until 8 sts rem. Next Rnd K2tog around until 2 sts rem. Knit 2 rnds more. Break yarn and pull through rem sts, weave in ends. SCARF With size 11 needles, cast on 17 sts. Row 1 K 1, *p 1, k 1; rep from *. Repeat Row 1 for 76". Bind off. Finishing Lay scarf flat, fold up 8" on each end to form pockets. Sew sides in place invisibly.
