GAUGE:

12 sts = 4 inches [10 cm] in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with MC on smaller needles.
13.75 sts + 16 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in St st with CC1 on larger needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop. ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

HAT
With MC and smaller needles, cast on 61 sts. Knit 3 rows. Work in St st until piece measures 5 inches [12.5 cm] from beginning, ending with a WS row.

Shape Crown
Row 1 K 1, *k 4, k2tog; repeat from * across – 51 sts.
Row 2 and all WS rows Purl.
Row 3 K 1, *k 3, k2tog; repeat from * across – 41 sts.
Row 5 K 1, *k 2, k2tog; repeat from * across – 31 sts.
Row 7 K 1, *k 1, k2tog; repeat from * across – 21 sts.
Row 9 K 1, *k2tog; repeat from * across – 11 sts.
Row 11 Repeat Row 9 – 6 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving an 18 inches [45.5 cm] tail. Thread tail through remaining sts, draw tight, and fasten. Use tail to sew seam. Weave in ends.

HEART EARFLAP – Make 2
Using yarn from inside of ball, with CC1 and larger needles, cast on 3 sts. Using yarn from outside of ball, cast on 3 more sts onto the same needle – 6 sts.
Row 1 (RS) *[K 1, M1] 2 times, k 1; repeat from * on second set of sts – 5 sts each side.
Row 2 and all WS rows Purl.
Row 3 *K 1, M1, k to last st, M1, k 1; repeat from * on second set of sts – 7 sts each side.
Row 5 (join sides of heart) K 1, M1, k 5, k2tog, k 5, M1, k 1 – 15 sts. Cut 2nd yarn.
Row 7 and all RS rows through Row 15 K 1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1 (2 sts decreased each row) – 5 sts remain after Row 15.
Row 17 K 1, slip 1, k2tog, psso, k 1 – 3 sts.
Row 19 Slip 1, k2tog, psso – 1 st.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

FINISHING
With CC2 and large-eyed, blunt needle, work blanket st around edges of Heart Earflaps. Sew Hearts to sides of Hat with top of Heart sewn to edge of Hat and bottom of Heart dangling down below the brim.
