14 sts + 26 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in garter stitch (knit every row) When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

Afghan is made from four separate squares

SQUARE - make 2 in A and 2 in B
Cast on 20 sts.

Knit every row until piece measures 6 inches.

Bind off as to knit.

Sew together invisibly as per assembly diagram:
To join two pieces together, thread a large-eyed blunt needle with B.

Place the edges of the squares side by side with the right sides (the sides that people will see) FACING OUT.

From the right side, stitch up the sides as shown, alternating one square to the other.

With RS facing and C, pick up and knit 40 sts across cast-on edge 1.

Knit 8 rows.

Bind off all sts as if to knit.

Repeat along edge 2.
