GAUGE:
9.5 sts + 15 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in Stockinette st (k on RS, p on WS). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:
FB Knit into front and back of st.
BF Knit into back and front of st.
FBF Knit into front, back, and front of st.
BFB Knit into back, front, and back of st.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to k, one at a time to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

NOTES:
Alligator is knit in pieces - back, belly, and 4 legs.

Both the back and belly pieces begin at the tail end, and work toward the head.

Because the back is worked in garter stitch, and because it should be slightly rounded when stuffed, it has more rows than the belly piece, and is wider than the belly piece.
