GAUGE:
14 sts = 3 inches [7.5 cm] + 32 rows = 4" [10 cm] in Garter st (knit every row). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Exact gauges is not imporant to this project.
INSTRUCTIONS
PLACEMAT
With A, cast on 48 sts.
[Knit 10 rows.
Change to B.
Knit 10 rows.
Change to A.] 5 times.
Knit 10 rows with A.
Change to C.
Knit 9 rows.
Bind off all sts as if to knit.
Side Edging
With RS facing and C, pick up and knit 48 sts across cast on edge.
Knit 8 rows.
Bind off all sts as if to knit.
Top and Bottom Edging
With RS facing and C, pick up and knit 74 sts evenly spaced across top edge of placemat.
Knit 8 rows.
Bind off all sts as if to knit.
Repeat along bottom edge.
Weave in ends.
COASTER
Note Coaster is worked in strips, then edged and sewn together.
STRIP 1
With A, cast on 6 sts.
Knit 10 rows.
Change to C.
Knit 10 rows.
Change to B.
Knit 10 rows.
Place sts on holder.
STRIP 2
With C, cast on 6 sts.
Knit 10 rows.
Change to B.
Knit 10 rows.
Change to A.
Knit 10 rows.
Place sts on holder.
STRIP 3
With B, cast on 6 sts.
Knit 10 rows.
Change to A.
Knit 10 rows.
Change to C.
Knit 10 rows.
FINISHING
Join Strips
With RS facing, place Strip 1 on empty needle, then Strip 2, then Strip 3.
With C, knit across 6 sts from Strip 3, 6 sts from Strip 2, then 6 sts from Strip 1.
Knit 2 more rows.
Bind off all sts as if to knit.
Bottom Edging
With RS facing and C, pick up and knit 6 sts across bottom of Strip 1, 6 sts across bottom of Strip 2, and 6 sts across bottom of Strip 3 - 18 sts.
Knit 2 more rows.
Bind off all sts as if to knit.
Side Edging
With RS facing and C, pick up and knit 22 sts along side of Coaster.
Knit 2 rows.
Bind off all sts as if to knit.
Repeat along opposite edge.
Sew Strips together between top and bottom edgings.
Weave in ends.
