Fringed Shrug

Lion Brand® Landscapes®(old)

10 sts + 16 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in Garter st (k every row) on larger needles. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Shrug is a shaped rectangle with ends sewn to form sleeves. Fringe is added around sleeve cuffs.

With smaller needles, cast on 25 sts. Work in K1, P1 Rib for 3" [7.5 cm]. Change to larger needles.
Inc Row [K 4, knit into front and back of next st] 5 times – 30 sts.
Continue in garter st, inc 1 st each end every 10 rows 2 times – 34 sts.
Work even in garter st until piece measures 51 1/2" [131 cm] from beg, or 8”
[20.5 cm] less than desired length.
Continue in garter st, dec 1 st each end every 10 rows 2 times – 30 sts.
Change to smaller needles.

Dec Row
[K 4, k2tog] 5 times – 25 sts.
Work in K1, P1 Rib for 3” [7.5 cm].
Bind off.

With RS out, fold shrug in half lengthwise. Beg at one sleeve cuff, sew a 20” [51 cm] seam along edge. Repeat for second sleeve. This leaves an opening at center for body of shrug. Try shrug on and adjust length of seams if necessary. Weave in ends.

Cut 72 strands of yarn approximately 6" [15 cm] long. For each fringe, hold 3 strands of yarn together and fold in half. Use crochet hook to draw through edge of piece, forming a loop. Pull ends of fringe through this loop. Pull to tighten. Make 12 fringes along the top of each sleeve cuff with 3 strands of yarn in each fringe. Trim fringe evenly.

Fringed Shrug Reviewed by Lori A R Head on 2011-10-30 ****
I used Lion Brand Homespun yarn in Fiesta. I did not put the fringe on the cuffs. I added a single crochet row around the body opening and topped that with a row of reverse crochet. This stopped the problem I was having with the opening curling away from the body as well as made the shrug fit better.
